Skardu Valley Tour
Overview & Mountain Character
“A comprehensive heritage and scenic journey into Baltistan, linking historic Tibetan-style fortresses, wind-carved desert dunes, and grand Karakoram vistas.”
Sitting at an altitude of approximately 2,300m, Skardu forms the primary springboard for expeditions venturing toward Karakoram crown peaks including K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums, and Masherbrum. This curated circuit takes travelers across lush riparian terraces, ancient royal citadels, and dramatic river highway gorges with continuous sightlines of the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges. Guests experience the living traditions, regional crafts, and famed hospitality of the Balti people, complemented by explorations of turquoise glacial lakes, high cold deserts, and historic trail gateways.

Route Timeline & Rotation Plan
Touch down at Islamabad International Airport where our logistics escort meets you and coordinates transport to your hotel. Use the day to recuperate after long flights, followed by an evening introductory briefing detailing the Skardu itinerary, with optional city exploration available time permitting.
Board the dramatic 45-minute flight north to Skardu across the high peaks, catching aerial views of Nanga Parbat and K2. Transfer to the hotel on arrival in Baltistan's historic capital and spend the afternoon browsing local markets and absorbing the region's unique heritage. (In case of flight disruption, embark overland via the Karakoram Highway with an overnight in Naran).
Drive into the fertile Shigar Valley, the gateway for major climbing routes. Tour the painstakingly restored 17th-century Shigar Fort Palace and the 14th-century Amburiq timber mosque, followed by an excursion across the dramatic dunes of the Sarfaranga Cold Desert framed by snow-dusted ridges.
Ascend by road to the cobalt waters of Satpara Lake, the primary freshwater source for the basin. Stop by the 8th-century Manthal Buddha Rock carving to explore local Buddhist antiquities, then continue into Kachura village to visit Upper Kachura Lake and the gardens of Shangrila Resort, with free evening hours in the bazaar.
Travel along the curves of the Indus and Shyok rivers toward Khaplu, historically the second-largest realm of ancient Baltistan and a crucial guardian of the Ladakh trade corridor. Today it serves as the Ghanche administrative center and approach point for the Hushe Valley. Distance: 103km. Duration: 2-3 hours.
Spend the day exploring Khaplu's historical architecture, including the 700-year-old timber-and-stone Chaqchan Mosque. Tour the restored 1840 Khaplu Palace (Yabgo Khar), an architectural landmark blending Kashmiri, Tibetan, and Balti motifs that now serves as a heritage retreat and museum.
Drive back along the Shyok River through traditional Balti villages, taking in the stark contrast between green irrigated fields and sheer arid mountain slopes as you re-enter the broad Skardu basin against the backdrop of the Karakoram.
Cross the high alpine wilderness of Deosai Plateau at 4,111m, known as the 'Land of Giants' and reserve for the Himalayan brown bear. Navigate unpaved tracks through rolling alpine meadows, stopping for a picnic meal before dropping down into the pine-clad Astore Valley. Distance: 152km. Duration: 6 hours.
Follow the Astore River down to the Karakoram Highway junction with views toward Nanga Parbat (8,126m). Ascend through the switchbacks of Babusar Pass (4,173m) before descending into the green meadows and alpine atmosphere of Naran. Distance: 210km. Duration: 6 hours.
Travel south from Naran through Abbottabad and Hasan Abdal to reach Islamabad, incorporating an en-route stop at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Taxila to explore ancient Gandharan ruins and sculptures. Distance: 280km. Duration: 6 hours.
A dedicated itinerary buffer day in the federal capital. Spend the day resting or visiting iconic landmarks such as Faisal Mosque, Daman-e-Koh viewpoint, and the Pakistan Monument, with time for souvenir markets or a visit to Rawal Lake.
Following breakfast, our team coordinates your private transfer to Islamabad International Airport for scheduled international departures, concluding the Skardu Valley tour.
