Astore Valley Tour

Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan•5-10 Days•Year Round
Expedition Synopsis

Overview & Mountain Character

“An inspiring travel route exploring one of Gilgit-Baltistan’s most scenic highland valleys, surrounded by steep pine ridges, quiet pastures, and massive Himalayan summits.”

Nestled near the western edge of the Himalayas, Astore Valley offers an extraordinary mixture of alpine woodlands, cold glacial torrents, flower-filled meadows, and raw mountain wilderness. The area commands magnificent sightlines toward the Rupal and Raikot flanks of Nanga Parbat (8,126m), while providing seamless connections to turquoise tarns, highland plateaus, and classic trekking trails. Guests gain meaningful cultural exposure through interactions with friendly mountain communities carrying on time-honored rural traditions. Specially designed for landscape photographers and leisure explorers, this circuit provides an uncrowded mountain retreat through northern Pakistan.

7 Itinerary Milestones

Set off at dawn from Islamabad and head northward along the Karakoram Highway (KKH), journeying through Mansehra, Shinkiari, and Battagram. Trace the deep river gorge of the Indus past Besham and Dasu, observing the ongoing infrastructure work on the Diamer-Bhasha dam before reaching Chilas for our overnight stay.

Accommodation: Hotel

After a morning meal, embark on a 4-hour drive from Chilas into the core of Astore Valley, following the river past tranquil hamlets. Stop at the local bazaar in Astore, then transfer to 4x4 vehicles for the ascent on gravel switchbacks toward Rama. Stroll up to Rama Lake for photography with unobstructed views of Nanga Parbat.

Accommodation: Hotel/Guest House in Rama or Astore

Take a tranquil morning walk through the fir forests by the Rama Polo ground before setting out across the high plains of Deosai. Traverse the river crossing at Bara Pani, enjoy an open-air picnic inside Deosai National Park, and pause at Sheosar Lake and Satpara Lake prior to descending into Skardu.

Accommodation: Hotel

Tour the renowned Shangrila resort gardens and the crystal-clear waters of Upper Kachura Lake. Proceed across the sand dunes of the Cold Desert into the fertile Shigar Valley, having a traditional lunch at the restored Shigar Fort Residence. Head back to Skardu in the late afternoon with an optional walk up to the historic Kharpocho Fort.

Accommodation: Hotel

Travel into Ghanche district to wander through the quiet village of Sailing and tour the Haji Mushtaq fish farm. Continue to Khaplu to explore the 700-year-old timber architecture of Chaqchan Mosque and the restored Khaplu Palace. Venture next into Kharmang district to view the tall cascade of Manthokha Waterfall before returning to Skardu.

Accommodation: Hotel

Commence the homeward drive toward Islamabad. Depending on seasonal pass conditions, travel across Babusar Pass into the Kaghan Valley; if the high route is snowbound, proceed south along the Karakoram Highway toward Besham.

Accommodation: Hotel/Guest House

Complete the last driving leg back to the capital city. Reach Islamabad by afternoon where our drivers will drop you off at your designated hotel or airport terminal, concluding the Astore Valley tour. End of services.
