Route Timeline & Rotation Plan
Arrive at Islamabad International Airport, meet your logistics guide, and transfer to your hotel. Use the day to recover from travel, followed by an evening briefing about the upcoming Thalle La journey. Optional city highlights can be visited if flight schedules permit.
Board a 45-minute mountain flight to Skardu with aerial panoramas of Nanga Parbat and K2. (If the flight is grounded due to weather, travel overland 461km to Naran via the Karakoram Highway). Spend the afternoon touring Skardu markets and Manthal Buddha Rock.
Ascend to the 18th-century Kharpocho Fort for views over the Indus, followed by a visit to the Organic Village to observe traditional mountain agricultural practices. Optional afternoon visits include Satpara Lake.
Follow the Indus and Shyok rivers east for 105 km (3 hours) to Khaplu. Settle into your hotel and tour the 14th-century Chaqchan Mosque, an architectural treasure of Baltistan.
Cross the Shyok River by wooden suspension bridge and drive up Thalle Lungma past barley terraces to Olmo Village. Enjoy tea with the locals and take an acclimatization walk. Night temperatures can dip to -5°C. Ascent: 250m.
Commence foot travel with a 6-hour walk up Thalle Valley through green pastures grazed by yaks and cattle. Stop at traditional pastoral shelters along the way before making camp at Azalan near the base of the pass. Ascent: 400m.
Set off early to negotiate the climb up Thalle La Pass (4,572m). The summit unfolds wide vistas toward the Haramosh peaks to the west and the Siachen mountains to the east. Descend 3 hours through juniper groves to Raseppi camp. Ascent: 900m.
Walk 4 hours downhill along pastures and the Bangma River into Shigar, arriving directly at the restored 17th-century Shigar Fort Palace for a relaxing heritage evening and hot showers. Ascent: 500m.
Board the domestic return flight to Islamabad, enjoying a final aerial view of Nanga Parbat. Transfer to the hotel with free time for shopping before an evening farewell dinner. (In case of flight cancellation, proceed by road toward Chilas).
Buffer day against mountain transit delays. If traveling by road from Chilas, reach Islamabad by late afternoon. If already in town, enjoy a relaxed day of leisure and sightseeing in the capital.
After breakfast, transfer to Islamabad International Airport for your homeward flight. End of Thalle La expedition services.
